About Ronald E. McNair

Education

Ronald Erwin McNair was born October 21, 1950, in South Carolina. He graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina A&T University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. In 1976, he earned his doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Professional

McNair started with Hughes Research Laboratory as a physicist specializing in laser physics. In 1978, he was selected by NASA for the space shuttle program to become and mission specialist. He died in the Challenger space shuttle accident in January 1986.

Scholastic Achievements and Honors

Presidential Scholar, 1967-71; Ford Foundation Fellow, 1971-74; National Fellowship Fund fellow, 1974-75; Omega Psi Phi Scholarship of the Year, 1975; National Society of Black Professional Engineers, 1979; and Distinguished National Scientist, 1979.

Ronald E. McNair "represents an outstanding role model of achievement, especially for young Black Americans," said the South Carolina delegation to Congress. This program is dedicated to his high standard of achievement.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded TRIO program designed to encourage eligible students to pursue graduate studies, leading to completing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. McNair Scholars participate in research and scholarly activities, preparing them for the rigors of graduate school. Scholars receive assistance during the program through faculty mentors, graduate school visits, and presenting completed research projects at professional conferences and various research symposia.
